Gilardino was a scoring sensation with Parma between 2002-2005. His scoring prowess helped power Parma to a UEFA semi-final berth a couple of years back. As is the case with many young effective strikers, he was scooped up by AC Milan. However, the problem with big sides is that there are too many superstars. It’s tough to carve out a niche in such circumstances. Some make it and others, for a multitude of reasons, can’t.
Gilardino’s stay with Milan was under whelming to say the least. He scored 36 goals in 94 appearances with Milan. Far below the pace he exhibited with Parma when he manged 50 in 96 games.
Reunited with Cesare Prandelli at Fiorentina, among Serie A’s finest coaches, Gila is on fine form again. He scored two goals in Champions League for the viola in a 2-2 draw with Olympique Lyonnais and has three goals in four games in Serie A this year.
Fiorentina should be able to challenge for the Scudetto and is quite capable of reaching the next round in Champions League. Why not? They have one of the world’s best goalies in Sebastien Frey, a solid defense and Adrian Mutu.
And with Gilardino back in tune with his foot, the viola have every right to be optimistic.
