Canada Is Done Stinking Out The CONCACAF Joint

Canada completed its World Cup qualifying campaign under the stewardship of Dale Mitchell and the results were spectacularly dismal.

A 3-0 loss to Jamaica meant the Canucks finished dead last in their group with a measly and meager two points and NO WINS. Honduras and Mexico progressed to the next round with 12 and 10 points respectively. Jamaica earned 10 points.

As you can see, Canada were blown right out of the water.

The CSA recently published its strategy plan for 2009-2013. I have no clue how they plan to right this ship but I don’t blame soccer fans if they are suspicious and skeptical of the CSA’s ability to accomplish anything.

Indeed, expect more of the same.

The Greatest Vancouver Canuck According To Garp – Make That TSN

Who was the greatest Canuck? A question asked to a panel of esteemed hockey poondits on TSN that yielded interesting answers.

The choices were Kirk McLean, Markus Naslund, Trevor Linden, Pavel Bure and Harold Snepsts. Ok, I added Snepsts.

First up was former Tampa Bay Lightning coach (not the dinosaur that was recently fired) John Tortorella. He chose McLean.

Snap! That’s the sound of Johnny losing his mind. Hey, how can you not love and respect Tortorella but really, it was a silly selection.

Next up, the enthusiastic Ray Ferraro. I fondly remember Ferraro (and Kevin Dineen, Ron Francis, Mike Liut, Sylvain Turgeon and Blaine Stoughton for that matter) skating and skillfully stick-handling for the forgetful blue and green colors of the Hartford Whalers.

Ferraro’s choice was Trevor Linden.

images1 The Greatest Vancouver Canuck According To Garp Make That TSN

Rocket Man

Yes, Linden was a great, productive, long standing captain blessed with all the so-called intangibles. He was a revered leader who bled for a franchise with a dubious track record of uniform design. Still.

Finally comes up the smooth and usually balanced Bob McKenzie. He chimed in with Markus Naslund. Alright. One can make a case for Naslund. So perhaps it’s not so crazy a choice.

I respect these choices but…

How can Pavel Bure not be the greatest Canuck ever?

Easily, Bure was one of the greatest pure goal scorers in the history of the NHL. He was also incredibly exciting. Hands down.

The Russian Rocket scored 437 goals in 702 games (.662 goals per game). He finished his career with 779 points (1.11 points per game). He won the Calder trophy in 1992 and the Rocket Richard trophy in 2001 and 2002.

It has always perplexed me as to why and how this guy is so under rated. Maybe it’s the Pacific wind or the high quality weed mixed in with the laid back nature of my West coast cousins. Who knows?

Imagine if his knees were healthy what he could have accomplished.

For the record, I enjoyed watching Thomas Gradin too.

Look mom, no hands!

Much to my surprise the powers that be over at Sports Illustrated have emailed me confirming that Jimmie will indeed be on their upcoming November 24th cover entitled “NASCAR COOL”. The email included the picture of the cover and the complete Lars Anderson story of Jimmie’s record tying 3rd straight Championship. As a NASCAR fan I appreciate the fact that Jimmie is finally getting his due – he deserves it. Thanks SI.

I don’t know if I have permission to do this but I’m going to put the cover up on my site for you to look at, but the Lars Anderson story you’ll have to get from the newsstand or si.com when it comes out – it is a good read by the way and I recommend you read it even if you are not a Jimmie fan because you just might be more of one when you’re done.

McNabb: My Dog Ate The Rule Book

That was some game between the Eagles and Bengals yesterday. Yesiree. Ooo boy. Lick me silly.

13-13 in a game the Iggles needed? Are you kidding moi?

If there was a perfect opponent to beat up on after a tough loss to the Giants the Bengals were it. But the Eagles completely botched it. Tsk-a-roni.

Eagles and Bengals? More like Tweety-Bird and the House cats out there. It was that tame and domesticated.

And then there’s Donovan McNabb’s admission he didn’t know games could end in ties. As anyone who watches Law & Order knows pleading ignorance is not a defense – not even for a leader. Nothing gets McCoy more riled up than ignorance.

As the Eagles played lethargically, just like they did, you know, during the Super Bowl against the Patriots a couple of years back, you would think someone – anyone – would have reminded the team, “Erm, guys. We need to move our asses here.”

Yes. They’re just a tad too relaxed out there for my taste.

070918 donovan vmed 8pwidec6 McNabb: My Dog Ate The Rule Book

What, me worry?

The criticism against McNabb over the years have been, in my opinion, unjustified. It’s not like he ever had, besides that flake T.O., a world class receiver to the throw the ball to. And now the Eagles have no one to hammer through defensive lines in short yardage situations.

Combine this with Andy Reid’s poor play calling, it’s not surprising this team is not capable of last minute comebacks. The Eagles can compete but in the clutch and when it matters most they can’t win close games.

God bless McNabb for standing up to be counted on his blog. But I’m beginning to wonder if the Reid-McNabb era is coming to a close in Filly.

It’s not over and the Eagles are indeed notoriously known for their late season surges but clinching a wild card spot this year will be tough in a very competitive NFC.

In the meantime, maybe they should work on their in-game communication skills, brushing up with the rule book and working on their sense of urgency in critical moments of any game.

Atlanta Hawks Off Endangered List

Atlanta+Hawks+Logo Atlanta Hawks Off Endangered List

By Kellex
Atlanta Hawks
Projected Finish: 50-32
Analysis:
There are a certain group of teams, I have always referred to as “Toxic Franchises.” These teams find themselves most often in the NBA Draft Lottery, and usually ending up with the eleventh or twelfth selection. They may for a time period make the playoffs, but they are usually eliminated in the first round. They are never close to winning anything. You know the teams I am referring to; the Los Angeles Clippers, Sacramento Kings, Minnesota Timberwolves, Memphis Grizzlies, (sorry to our buddies at 3 Shades of Blue but unfortunately true) Charlotte Bobcats.
Every once in a while a team gets to climb out of that primordial ooze, and become legitimate contenders. I covered the Cleveland Cavaliers in both phases. Before the arrival of the “Chosen One” you could hear the squeak of the players’ sneakers in the nose bleed seats. When providence shined down on the Cavaliers, and they drafted LeBron James they had instant credibility.
The Hawks have gone around the task in another way, building around a free agent young star in Joe Johnson and then augmenting him with the NBA Draft, and trades. Still not sure whether Bibby is a good fit for this team, short or long term. The Hawks did not deserve to make the playoffs with their horrible season record. But they showed they belonged by taking the eventual NBA Champions Boston Celtics to seven games. The Hawks have arrived!
You know that old saying “I hate to say I told you so?” It’s a lie! We love to say I told you so! It validates our beliefs, it tells not only ourselves but others, we know what we are saying. It gives us credibility, especially important to those of us who are in the media. I want you to trust what I am writing, that there is knowledge behind the words you see on your screen. That’s how I gain your trust, and your loyalty. My credibility is my greatest asset, it served me well as I traversed the locker rooms of Cleveland’s three professional sports teams. It allowed me to ask questions from athletes, that other reporters were afraid to ask. That trust does not come quickly, it must be earned.
Although it is still extremely early in the young NBA campaign, so far Atlanta has validated my faith in them. If you have not been following the standings, the Hawks have started out the season 6-0 as of this writing. Atlanta will take on the Boston Celtics Wednesday night, and that streak could very well end. However if it does, it still does not diminish what they have done to open their season. The Hawks are once again a viable NBA franchise, making Atlanta a viable NBA market.
Most of the early success is due to three players, shooting guard Joe Johnson, big man Al Horford, and veteran point guard Mike Bibby. Although I was unsure if Bibby was willing to buy into head coach Mike Woodson’s game plan so far he has. Johnson is already an All-Star in the Association, and Horford is one in the making. Add forward Josh Smith and Flip Murray, who seems re-energized coming off the bench, the Hawks play tough every night.
Atlanta will not stay this hot all season. I think my preseason prediction of 50-32 will prove to be pretty accurate. But Atlanta has taken a moribund franchise and turned it into an exciting team. The person who is probably most excited about that fact is NBA Commissioner David Stern. He realizes that the stronger each individual team is, the stronger the Association as a whole will be.
There has been a whole lot of speculation about where Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James will end up in 2010 since the end of last season. Do you know what team NBA Commissioner Stern wants LBJ to sign with? The Cleveland Cavaliers, because if he doesn’t you might as well sell the team, and shut down the Q Arena. The Cavaliers will never draw a single fan if LBJ leaves the team. The Cavaliers brain-trust knows it, as does the Commissioner. If LeBron James leaves Cleveland, the Cavaliers will be headed to Seattle. And truthfully, I don’t know if Cleveland sports fans could maintain their sanity.
A chain is only as strong as it’s weakest link. The fact that the link that resides in Atlanta has gotten stronger is good for Atlanta, and good for the NBA.

Finally, Glenn Anderson Makes It To The Hall

kanderson Finally, Glenn Anderson Makes It To The Hall

Back on the beat

Along with Igor Larionov, Ray Scapinello and Ed Chynoweth, Glenn Anderson was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

It was a long time coming.

Cues Doobbie Brothers here for no apparent reason.

For fans too young to remember Glenn Anderson, he made his mark wearing the blue and orange for the Edmonton Oilers in the 1980s – one of the greatest dynasties in hockey history. They may even sit comfortable among the most prolific sports dynasties in all of North American sports. He closed his career with 498 goals and 1099 points; so irritatingly close to 500 and 1100.

A chippy, if not dirty (according to some friends of mine) player, Anderson was a strong, fast skating sharp stick handler who had a penchant for scoring timely goals. He’s what we call “clutch” or a “money” player.

Growing up watching Anderson that’s what I remember most, he’s ability to score winning goals in crucial moments in the playoffs.

The Oilers had a collection of legends on their team: Paul Coffey, Mark Messier, Grant Fuhr, Jari Kurri, Kevin Lowe (though not as decorated) and of course the heart and soul, the leader and captain Wayne Gretzky.

Among those great names, Anderson easily sits comfortably alongside them as a major part of the Edmonton Oilers dynasty.

Protective Head Gear In Soccer?

It should, if not has, to be asked:

Should head gear for keepers in soccer be mandatory?

Before we get all hot-jiggity on the subject, as a former soccer player myself the question leaves me squirmy too. But let’s me honesty: there are many head injuries (of varying degrees) during a game. Some have advocated protective soft helmets for all players but I’m not sure this will ever be instituted. This would change the face of the game as it would probably entail the removal or at least the minimization of heading the ball.

That being said, there is little danger in allowing it for keepers.

I’m a big proponent, as many people are, of introducing new technology in soccer. It’s in the best interest of the game.

If so, isn’t protecting the health of players in the interest of the game as well?

Milan Bets On Beckham

By John ST

Soccer Net Live

We have seen how the career of David Beckham blossomed from his debut at Manchester United at the age of 17 to his now tired club appearances for LA Galaxy. For all our misgivings about Beckham being a self-promoting fashion icon rather than professional footballer, one thing is clear, the man never gives up.

During his time at Manchester United, Beckham won the Premier League title six times, the FA Cup twice, and the UEFA Champions League in 1999. In 2003, he left Old Trafford for Real Madrid and many critics deemed him a loser after four barren seasons. Yet he emerged from his Spanish stint in 2007 with a major trophy – La Liga championship title, before leaving for Major League Soccer.

davidbeckham1 Milan Bets On BeckhamRecently, his international career picked up… for no apparent reason. All thanks to England coach Fabio Capello, Beckham has been steadily accumulating England caps, without any eye-catching performances. He was fielded as a late substitute in each of England’s World Cup qualifiers this year, playing a total of 28 minutes for his four caps.

The total tally for Golden Balls is 107 England caps and he will equal Bobby Moore’s all-time appearances by featuring against Germany next month. That would leave David Beckham 17 caps shy of Peter Shilton’s long-standing record of playing 125 times for his country between 1970 and 1999.

Shilton is clearly unhappy with the manner in which Beckham has closed in on his record. He said: “I didn’t think it was justifiable at all to bring him on with two minutes to go against Belarus. I couldn’t believe it. You had Shaun Wright-Phillips on the pitch as well and I couldn’t see what reason there could be.”

Certainly, any self-respecting footballer will prefer to earn his cap by making significant contributions to the team rather than to receive hand-outs from the coach. But to be fair, a goalkeeper enjoys longevity and can last the entire match because there is less physical demand on the body.

An outfield player will have to burst his lungs running up and down the pitch, fighting for possession, creating chances as well as enduring malicious tackles. In this respect, I will cut Beckham some slack and accept his role as a substitute, while breaking records along the way.

I am fine with cameo appearances so long as the team’s fortune is not compromised by the 33-year old midfielder whose pace is long gone and can only deliver spectacular free-kicks once in a blue moon. If Beckham can put in even more commitment and hard work than his peers, I keep faith with Capello’s decision that Beckham’s England days are far from over.

Coming back to Beckham’s club career, I am surprised that there is still light at the end of the tunnel. His insipid performances with La Galaxy over two seasons is a disgrace. For the amount of money he wringed from the club while it suffers from a double whammy of falling gate receipts and poor economic conditions in America, I believe not many fans will shed tears over the sacking of David Beckham.

Actually, if Beckham can’t survive in the Major League Soccer, the answer is obvious on his usefulness to clubs harboring title ambitions. Yet, AC Milan surprised all and sundry with their unsettling, if not scandalous, decision. The Italian club has confirmed that David Beckham will join them on a short-term loan deal during the MLS close season.

Golden Balls now has a chance to feature in both Serie A and UEFA Cup matches for an illustrious club and hopefully justify to his detractors, his continued presence in the England team. The LA Times seems to be none too sad about this development when it reported last week that “the Beckham circus could fold its tents and the club could go back to being what it once was — competitive in MLS”.

This statement is fair except for the term “competitive” which is at odds with the entire setup at LA Galaxy. In the past four years, Galaxy have accumulated 41 wins, 55 defeats and 27 draws in the regular season. Only Real Salt Lake, a new MLS franchise, has fared worse.

Currently, LA Galaxy lie second from bottom of the Western Standings, with no chance of reaching the playoffs. This is a repeat scenario of Beckham’s first season in California. Galaxy’s record of eight wins, 13 defeats and eight draws represents a failed experiment in creating a “sexy championship team” with David Beckham on the roster.

Beckham’s contributions to LA Galaxy stands at a paltry five goals and 11 assists. These are hardly the sort of statistics that will interest AC Milan, a seven-time European champion. Yet, the Rossoneri were clearly rubbing their hands in glee, probably in anticipation of more fans and merchandise sales.

Despite Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti’s declaration that the Rossonneri would like to make the proposed move permanent, the Galaxy captain insisted that he will be back in California for the start of the 2009 MLS season. He said: “I will be back. My commitment is to the Galaxy and that has not changed.”

“It’s a two-month spell, maybe a little longer. Milan have got a great team, so I’m not expecting to go straight in the starting line-up. I will have to earn the right to get into that team. I’m in Serie A form. It’s about getting my fitness up.

“I came to the Galaxy to actually win trophies so I want to do that. I’m also very committed to my role as the MLS ambassador as well. It’s been slightly disappointing because we haven’t made the playoffs again.”

Does AC Milan really need the 33-year-old England midfielder for footballing purposes? The squad is already overflowing with exceptional talents which include FIFA World Player of the Year Kaka, along with fellow Brazilian internationals Ronaldinho and Alexandre Pato.

Experience is rich with veterans Clarence Seedorf and former sharpshooter, Andriy Shevchenko returning to his favorite hunting ground after a miserable time at Chelsea. And not to forget, an array of Italian World Cup winners: Andrea Pirlo, Gennaro Gattuso, Gianlucca Zambrotta, Maldini and Alessandro Nesta.

In such a competitive club, it is difficult to imagine Beckham breaking into the first XI on a regular basis. Former Gunners, Mathieu Flamini, has only played four matches (3 domestic and I European), so it is a wonder if Beckham can even make it onto the bench, especially when he is already old, has never tasted Italian soccer and defense never been his forte.

Traditionally, big name players who were over the hill struggled to carve a name for themselves when they arrived at AC Milan. Ronaldo was overweight and out-of-form when he arrived at the San Siro from Real Madrid in Jan. 2007. The Brazilian scored a few goals but never regained his lethal form.

His ruptured ligaments ruled him out for nine months and AC Milan privately confirmed that Ronaldo would never play for them again even if he made a full recovery. Ex-Italy forward Roberto Baggio was among other top players who failed to hit their earlier heights after signing for Milan.

Financially though, it could be a mutually beneficial arrangement for both club and player. Initial reports reveal that AC Milan will only take Beckham on a ‘free’ loan, meaning that the Italians would not fork out money to LA Galaxy and would just pay part or none of his wages.

Milan are cash tight at the moment following the purchase of Ronaldinho from Barcelona, so they will be glad to take Beckham for pennies on the dollar. Beckham, as one of the world’s most famous sportsmen, is a marketing machine which singlehandedly propelled Real Madrid to the richest club in the world with lucrative sales of replica shirts and other revenue generating opportunities.

Consider the mania which greeted the club the day after Ronaldinho joined in July. Milan fans snapped up over a quarter of all the season tickets sold up to that point and hits on the website were 10 times the average. davidbeckhamarmani.thumbnail Milan Bets On Beckham

As for David Beckham, the fashion-conscious superstar is already well-known in Italy and models underwear for famous Italian designer Giorgio Armani. Billboards of his half-naked body already span the country, so his effect on Milan fans will be nothing short of spectacular.

However, one has to be careful of Beckham’s waning appeal amid the current economic crisis. Last season, Beckham drew a crowd of 66,237 to Giants Stadium in New Jersey to watch him play the New York Red Bulls but this season the attendance was 46,754.

FC Dallas had a crowd of 22,331 when Beckham came to Pizza Hut Park in May, up from 14,600 when Galaxy played there without Beckham last June. But the attendances fell to 8,960 and 8,541 for each of Dallas’s next two home games, signs that Beckham’s impact is only ephemeral.

Galaxy’s owners, Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) has not committed to the deal but coach Arena has already highlighted his displeasure: “I don’t see where that benefits MLS or the Galaxy. Given the position the Galaxy is in, it would seem very odd to me if we were loaning out our top players at the start of the season. ”

Despite a sticky start, AC Milan are getting into the groove and looking like Serie A title contenders. The Beckham circus could unfortunately disrupt the balance and upset a few key players. Maldini was reportedly happy with the signing though.

On his team’s good run of form, Ancelotti attributed it to his defense, saying: “Favalli, Bonera, Maldini, as well as all the others, have improved individually as well as in a team sense. But the credit also goes to the strikers, who are able to move well on the pitch without ever leaving too much space behind.”

Ancelotti said of Beckham: “I wouldn’t just loan him, I’d buy him. He’s still a valid player who can be useful to us, and we can be useful to him. He will not be a tourist.”

But he remained ambivalent about Beckham’s role in the team. ”If Beckham wanted to train with us, it wouldn’t be a problem for me.” No mention of Beckham featuring for the team.

It will be interesting to see if Ancelotti can find a slot for Beckham and bring out of the best in him. The intense competition with Ronaldinho and Kaka will spur Beckham to outperform himself, which will ultimately work to the benefit of England… that is, if it works out at all.

Analysis
This team proved the critics wrong last year who said that they could not play with both Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoglu in the starting lineup. Neither player is close to being a power forward, and in may ways have the same skill set. But when you have arguably the best center currently playing in the Association in that same lineup in Howard, one can get away from a traditional lineup. Two big questions remain; Does “The Batman” veteran power forward Tony Battie have anything left in the tank? The other question is have Cleveland and Philadelphia now surpassed Orlando in the Eastern Conference pecking order?

Yes, I am well aware of how the Miami Heat played last season. Yes, I realize that a lot of NBA prediction columns are putting the Heat dead last. Yes, I realize that outside of Mark Blount, they have no true center, and their starting lineup is unconventional to say the least. But look at the talent! D-Wade being back healthy will add easily another 10-15 wins from last season’s “lost season.” Watch out for Miami, they will surprise a lot of folks.

The greatest team that almost was? The Washington Wizards should have at least made the Eastern Conference Finals by now with all that talent. The window of opportunity is closing quickly.

Analysis
The question now becomes will Brown turn the Bobcats around and get them into the post season, before his insecurities, and ego have him looking for a new home? No one will ever deny at Larry Brown is one of the best game day coaches of his generation. However because of those inner demons, he keeps on running. Brown has the goods with the Bobcats to make the team a contender. Two young stars in Wallace and J-Rich, a more than serviceable point guard in Felton. And a player who has truly never lived up to his potential in Okafor. Does Brown make him a power forward instead of a center, something Emeka is probably more suited for? One thing for sure with Brown, you will never be bored!
